Dr. Bloom notes that warning labels for lunch meats are useful in some situations, but not for foods like cooked hot dogs on sale in public places.
“To me, the take-home message of the paper is that the increase in cases is resulting from the overlay of ‘traditional’ food poisoning and ‘new mentality’ food poisoning,” he explains, “which results from the rejection of proven methods for protecting food. It is fairly easy to ensure that food is properly cooked and stored. It is much less easy to correct ignorance in an anti-science climate.”
