“Often the mere existence of new methods of fraud detection can be a deterrent for criminals, as it increases the risk of getting caught, which in itself has value,” Temple says. “The food industry doesn’t want these criminals operating within their ranks either as it costs them billions in terms of food recalls, additional testing, business interruption, loss of customer confidence, and potential legal action.”
But testing, Temple underlines, is a reactive process, rather than a preventative one.
“For the most part,” she says, “the food industry’s best defence is a strong offence—by carrying out thorough audits of their supply networks, reducing the steps in their supply chains, and building long-lasting relationships with trusted suppliers, they can help reduce their risk of fraudulent activity.”
